How to find the perfect baby shampoo

As a parent, we know that you only want what’s best for your baby and that their wellbeing is your top priority. And protecting your baby also means protecting their skin during bath time. We’re here to help you find the best products that will make your bath time routine fun and safe so you can truly bond.

Your baby’s skin

A baby’s skin is highly sensitive and vulnerable until they’re about 2 years old (yes, that long!). In those 2 years, their skin is almost 30% thinner than adult skin, so they need different products and care.

There are a few issues that come with a child’s thin skin:

  1. It’s easily irritated. Since it’s thin and porous, their skin easily absorbs certain pollutants it comes in contact with which is why babies tend to develop more rashes and red spots.
  2. It’s more susceptible to sun damage. Babies don’t produce enough melanin (the pigment in our skin) to protect them so it’s important to use products with high SPF on babies.
  3. It doesn’t retain moisture. A baby’s skin loses moisture twice as fast as adult skin, so introducing safe moisturising products is a must.
  4. It doesn’t regulate body temperature the way adults do, so make sure to always dress your baby appropriately according to the weather.

Best bath time practices

To protect your baby’s skin during a bath, it’s important to find products and shampoos with mild ingredients.

Look for ones that are formulated specifically for babies and sensitive skin like NIVEA BABY Pure & Mild Shampoo with its ultra-gentle Chamomile extract. Those usually do not contain alcohol and have a pH that’s compatible to a child’s sensitive skin.

For new-born babies, you’ll only need a couple drops of NIVEA BABY Delicate Caring Oil in your bath water as to not disrupt your baby’s developing skin barrier.

Basic bath time routine

You don’t need to wash your baby’s hair every day, or every other day. Make sure to wash it only when needed to avoid dehydrating their skin. Daily hygiene is important, however it’s important to protect their skin barrier by not over-washing it.

Use your NIVEA BABY Pure & Mild Shampoo and massage their little heads gently, then simply rinse it out with lukewarm water. Now you’ve got a clean baby!
The most important thing is to find what works best for you and your baby when it comes to products, your own routine and your dynamic. Bath time is a special time for both you and your baby so make sure you’re both enjoying it.

Take care of yourself beautiful mama!
