How gradual tan works and
HOW TO APPLY IT
What is a
GRADUAL TAN?
Gradual tanning has emerged as a preferred approach for many, allowing them to achieve a subtle and buildable glow over time. Gradual tan uses a method that mimics the slow and natural process of sun exposure, avoiding sudden changes in skin tone. This method could help provide a more even and realistic tan, reducing the likelihood of streaks or uneven colouration. Additionally, gradual tanning allows individuals to customise the intensity of their tan, making it suitable for various skin tones and personal preferences.
How does
GRADUAL TAN WORK?
The lower concentration allows for slower colour development, mimicking the gradual process of natural sun exposure. As users apply the product over consecutive days, the tan deepens, providing a more natural and even appearance.
Additionally, it's important to note that even when using gradual tan products, sun protection is still important. While these products offer a controlled way to achieve a sun-kissed glow, they do not provide protection against harmful UV rays.
Gradual tan lotion differs from regular self-tanners by providing a more subtle transformation over several applications, as opposed to the quicker and more intense colour change of regular self-tanners with higher concentrations of DHA.
DHA in tanning stands for Dihydroxyacetone, serving as the active ingredient within some tanning products. There are other tanning products that use different mechanisms, such as Melanin Bronzers or Erythrulose.
This compound interacts with the amino acids in our deceased skin cells, resulting in a darkened appearance and creating the illusion of a natural sun tan. This gradual approach offers users better control over the final tan shade, ensuring a more natural-looking and streak-free result.
Choosing the
RIGHT SELF-TANNER
When choosing a self-tanner, it's important to consider your skin type and tone, as well as your desired result. Opt for formulas that cater to your specific skin needs, whether you have sensitive skin, dry skin, or are prone to breakouts. If you want a quick result, choose an instant self-tanner suited to your skin tone. Bear in mind, however, that it needs to be applied carefully to achieve an even result. If you want to minimise the chances of getting a streaky tan, use a gradual self-tanner which provides a more authentic and flattering result.
Recommendations for both men and women:
While many products cater to both genders, it's important to consider individual factors such as scent, texture, and application methods. Keep in mind that men and women can often use the same self-tanning products. However, one consideration for men might be body hair, which could potentially cause streaky results. It's advisable to choose products with light, easy-to-spread formulas that provide a gradual tan to minimise the risk of streaks.
Self-tanner for
DIFFERENT SKIN TONES:
- Fair skin:Preferably use a low-concentration self-tanner to avoid an intense change. Apply repeatedly until you achieve a natural-looking glow.
- Medium or olive skin:Medium or olive skin tones can benefit from a variety of gradual and instant tanners. Adjust the application frequency based on the product you are using and the desired tan intensity.
- Dark skin:Darker skin tones may opt for a self-tanner with a higher concentration of DHA to suit their skin tone, or for gradual tan for a radiant boost that will enhance dark skin's natural complexion.
Tips for face and
BODY SELF-TANNERS:
Choosing the right self-tanner for the face and body requires different considerations. For the face, opt for products suitable for facial skin as body self-tanners may be too dense for the face and could potentially lead to breakouts. It is important when selecting a self-tanner for the body, to focus on factors such as coverage, ease of application, and the desired level of tan intensity.
To achieve a sun-kissed natural-looking tan, try NIVEA Radiance Gradual Tan Moisturiser. Suitable for both the face and body, this gradual tanning moisturising lotion helps to develop a gradual, natural-looking tan, while its formula with Q10 helps to firm and tighten the skin.
The importance of exfoliation & moisturisation
WHEN USING GRADUAL TAN:
Before starting to apply a gradual tan, it is important to exfoliate your skin as it helps remove dead skin cells. By getting rid of rough or uneven patches, exfoliation ensures a more uniform application of the self-tanner and reduces the likelihood of streaks or blotches. If possible, exfoliate the day or a few hours before, and follow up with a moisturising lotion.
Focus on exfoliating areas with thicker skin, such as elbows, knees, and ankles, to prevent product buildup in crevices and ensure seamless blending. Utilising gentle exfoliating scrubs or tools, such as exfoliating gloves, helps buff away impurities without causing irritation or abrasion.
To encourage the gradual tan to set in the skin, avoid exfoliating your skin immediately after applying the gradual tan and in the days that follow. On the other hand, if you notice that your tan is becoming uneven, regular exfoliation can aid in fading the pigment. As the top layer of skin sheds naturally, exfoliation promotes a smoother transition between tanned and untanned areas, preventing the tan from appearing patchy or uneven over time. Reapply the gradual tan regularly to maintain the desired level of tan.
Regular moisturising and exfoliating not only enhance the evenness of the tan but also support the natural renewal of the skin's surface, giving it a healthy appearance.
It is essential to use gradual tan products on sufficiently moisturised skin. As the application of a moisturiser can reduce the fixation of the gradual tan, it is preferable to moisturise the skin the day before. However, on the day of application, it may be useful to additionally moisturise dry or rough areas such as elbows, knees and ankles, since the self-tanner tends to cling unevenly there, resulting in a streaky or patchy appearance.
Moreover, maintaining skin hydration post-application helps extend the longevity of the tan. Well-moisturised skin holds onto the tanning pigment better, resulting in a more prolonged and even tan. Opting for a hydrating lotion with nourishing ingredients can help lock in moisture and contribute to prolonging the radiance of your tan.

GRADUAL TAN
Gradual tan development time: It can take multiple applications over several days for a subtle and gradual colour change.
Controlled transformation: Allows for better control over the final tan shade, reducing the risk of streaks and uneven colouration.
Application process: Applied similarly to regular lotions, providing an even and streak-free result when applied with care.
Buildable glow: Users can customise the intensity of their tan by adjusting the frequency of application.
Step-by-step guide for an even and
STREAK-FREE GRADUAL TAN:
- Prepare your skin:The day before application, start with exfoliation to remove dead skin cells. Focus on areas with rough skin, like elbows and knees, to ensure an even tan application.
- Hydrate:
After exfoliation, and if necessary before application, moisturise dry areas, such as elbows, knees and ankles, to prevent the self-tanner from clinging to dry patches.
- Apply in sections:Begin with one section at a time, ensuring even coverage. For example, start with the arms before moving to the torso, legs and feet.
- Use circular motions:Apply the product using circular motions to avoid streaks and ensure an even distribution.
- Blend thoroughly:Pay special attention to areas where colour transitions occur, such as wrists and ankles. Blend carefully for a seamless finish.
- Wait for drying:Allow the product to dry completely before dressing to prevent smudging or transfer.
- Wash hands:Wash your hands immediately after application to avoid tan palms.
- Legs:Apply the gradual tan in upward strokes to avoid streaks and ensure even coverage. Take extra care around the knees and ankles for a natural look.
- Face:Sparingly apply a gradual tan product specifically designed for the face, blending it into the hairline and jawline for a seamless transition. Avoid the eye area.
- Applicator mitt:Gradual tan can generally be applied by hand, but you can also use a mitt to ensure smooth and streak-free application while protecting your hands. Instant self-tanners usually require the use of a mitt – be sure to read the instructions on the product packaging.
- Face applicator or brush:For precise application on the face, use a dedicated face applicator or a makeup brush.
- Exfoliating gloves:These can be used in pre-application exfoliation, removing dead skin cells and ensuring a smooth canvas for the self-tanner.
Tips for prolonging
SELF-TAN:
- Hydrate regularly:Well-moisturised skin holds onto a tan better, so use a hydrating lotion or oil daily to maintain skin moisture.
- Avoid hot baths and showers:Hot water can accelerate tan fading, so opt for lukewarm water during baths and showers.
- Pat, don't rub:Gently pat your skin dry after showering instead of rubbing vigorously to preserve the tan. It is recommended to reapply every few days to maintain your gradual tan.
- Enhance radiance:Some lotions and hydrating creams can help to add an extra glow to your tan, providing a subtle shimmer and highlighting your skin.
- Spot treat for dimension:Apply bronzing products strategically on areas like cheekbones, collarbones and shins to create dimension and highlight.
- Exfoliate before reapplication:If necessary, lightly exfoliate before reapplying your self-tanner to remove any remaining tan and ensure an even base.
- Choose the right time:Apply gradual tan daily until you achieve your desired skin tone. Then reapply every few days, or more often if necessary, to maintain your tan. Avoid showering for a few hours following application to allow the product to bind well to the skin – you can do this right before going to bed and shower in the morning.
- Hydrate your skin:Nourish dry winter skin by moisturising regularly to prevent the self-tanner from clinging to dry patches.
- Choose gradual tanners:Opt for gradual tanners during winter for a subtle and buildable glow, avoiding drastic colour changes.
- Maintain moisture:Apply your preferred moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated, extending the life of your tan during colder months.
