How to Get Rid of
Frown Lines?
All you need to know about
Frown Lines
Wrinkles are one of the first signs of ageing; as collagen and elastin production in our skin declines, wrinkles appear as an imprint of our rich facial expressions. Although wrinkles only add to our character and charisma, there are a variety of methods for reducing and preventing them.
Learn everything there is to know about frown lines and how to prevent and reduce them.
Frown lines (also known as glabellar lines or “11” lines) are vertical lines that form between our brows as a result of our facial muscles moving repeatedly when we frown or make other facial expressions.
The movement is generated by two major muscles: the corrugator supercilii and the procerus.
When we are young, the lines are only superficial and fade away once we stop frowning. However, due to ageing and other factors, frown lines may become deeper and more visible even when not frowning, giving the false impression of anger.
One of the most common causes of frown lines in both men and women is ageing. When we are young, our skin simply bounces back into its original position, causing the lines to fade quickly. However, as we age, our skin loses its elasticity and firmness, revealing frown lines.
Other factors are:
- Repeated facial expressions: Recurrent facial muscle movements begin to show visible imprints on your face.
- Sun exposure: UV rays cause collagen and elastin to break down in your skin, making it more prone to wrinkle formation.
- Stress: Frown lines are also called stress or thinker’s wrinkles. When we feel stressed, our facial muscles become tense and tend to form a repeated frown expression.
- Genetics: Our DNA stores information about our natural tendency to develop frown lines or other wrinkles.
How to prevent
FROWN LINES
Frown lines can be prevented by making these lifestyle changes:
- Relax your face: As frown lines are a result of repeated muscle movement, try to avoid frowning by being more mindful when you do it and relaxing your face.
- Use sunscreen: By protecting your face from UV rays, you can help prevent premature ageing and wrinkles.
- Stop smoking: Among many other negative effects on your health, smoking has a bad effect on your skin, impairing its ability to repair itself.
- Healthy diet: Having a diet rich in vitamins and minerals gives your skin a supply of antioxidants which help the skin to repair and maintain itself.
- Moisturise in and out: Drinking plenty of water and using face moisturisers regularly will help your skin stay hydrated, plumped and bouncy.
How to get rid of
Frown Lines
When choosing the perfect treatment for yourself, take into consideration the level of invasiveness you are willing to undertake and the condition of your wrinkles.
- Skin exfoliation: In cases where your frown or glabella lines are not very deep, you can try reducing them by exfoliating your skin using chemical exfoliators. Exfoliation activates the skin’s natural healing mechanism, leading to healthy skin growth and can improve the surface of the skin.
- Facial exercises: Our face contains over 50 different muscles and most are rarely used while others are overused; as a result, the skin starts folding into wrinkles. Facial exercises help to tone the muscles, which helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Facial massage: The tension in your facial muscles can cause wrinkles. Facial massage helps to relax these muscles while increasing blood circulation and, as a result, promoting collagen production.
- Sleep: Sleep allows your skin to recharge and your muscles to relax – try sleeping on your back because the pillowcase can drag on your skin during the night, giving it a creased appearance.
- Facial skin care: Skincare products with plumping effects that contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, retinol, collagen and Q10 can help reduce frown lines. Similar to cosmetic procedures, a frown line filler or anti-ageing products will fill in wrinkles and balance the volume of your face.
