Recycled Aluminium at NIVEA: Giving Valuable Materials a New Life
At NIVEA, your skin always comes first. At the same time, we’re constantly working to further improve our products and packaging.
For selected packaging applications, we’re increasingly using recycled aluminium. After use, aluminium can be processed and reused, helping to keep valuable materials in circulation for longer.
Find out more about how NIVEA uses recycled aluminium and the role this material plays in our packaging.
Can Aluminium Be Recycled?
Aluminium is widely used in everyday packaging, from beverage cans to food containers and foil. Its material properties help protect products and keep them fresh. Aluminium is also highly durable and can be collected, processed and reused after use.
At NIVEA, aluminium remains an important packaging material for selected products, including shaving gels, deodorants and the iconic NIVEA Creme tin. By increasing the use of recycled aluminium in selected packaging applications, we aim to keep valuable materials in use for longer.

The iconic NIVEA Creme tin made with at least 80% recycled aluminium. This change helps increase the use of recycled materials while maintaining the quality and appearance you expect from NIVEA.
Together with our suppliers, we worked to integrate recycled aluminium into the tin and ensure it meets our high quality standards. The NIVEA Creme tin is one example of how we’re continuously developing our packaging and increasing the use of recycled materials wherever possible.
What Role Can Aluminium Play in a Circular Economy?
Aluminium can be collected, processed and reused after use. Its material properties make it possible to keep aluminium in use across multiple recycling cycles.
It’s estimated that around 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today.¹ As a result, aluminium is often considered a material that can help keep valuable resources in circulation for longer.
A circular economy aims to keep products and materials in use for as long as possible. Its key principles include:
- Avoiding waste wherever possible
- Keeping products and materials in use for longer
- Collecting, processing and reusing materials after use
Aluminium has material properties that make it well suited to keeping materials in use for longer. After use, it can be collected, processed and reused, which is why aluminium is often mentioned as a material that can support circular material flows.
Some of the key properties of aluminium include:
- Aluminium can be collected, processed and reused after use.²
- Producing recycled aluminium requires significantly less energy than producing primary aluminium.¹
- Studies indicate that the use of recycled aluminium can be associated with lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to primary aluminium.³
For this reason, we’re increasing the use of recycled aluminium in selected packaging applications and continuously working to expand the use of recycled materials in our packaging.
