Respecting Animals

Respect for animals is an important part of our approach. We know that many consumers have questions about animal testing and vegan skincare products, and we want to provide clear and transparent information on these topics.
At NIVEA, we have a clear position against animal testing and offer a wide range of vegan skincare products that do not contain animal-derived ingredients. We also work with suppliers and sourcing programs that support our standards for responsible sourcing and biodiversity considerations.

NIVEA's Position on Animal Testing

At NIVEA, we believe that animal testing is not necessary to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of cosmetic products. With more than 40 years of experience, Beiersdorf has been involved in the development and application of alternative testing methods. In 1992, Beiersdorf researchers contributed to the development of one of the first officially accepted alternative test methods
We support the global acceptance of alternative scientific methods and work with scientific experts, industry associations and other stakeholders to advance their development and recognition. Our aim is to contribute to a future in which cosmetic product safety can be assessed without animal testing.

Why Doesn't NIVEA Use Claims Such as "Not Tested on Animals" or "Cruelty Free"?

The marketing of cosmetic products tested on animals has been banned in the European Union since 2004, and since 2013 this has also applied to cosmetic ingredients. NIVEA supports and complies with these legal requirements.
As a result, all cosmetic products marketed in the EU must meet the same legal requirements regarding animal testing. For this reason, NIVEA does not use claims such as "not tested on animals" or "cruelty free" to describe products sold in the EU.
Instead, we believe in providing transparent information about our position on animal testing and our long-standing work in the development and promotion of alternative testing methods

What Are Vegan Cosmetics?

The term "vegan cosmetics" refers to products that do not contain animal-derived ingredients. This includes skincare, body care and other cosmetic products.
Some cosmetic ingredients can be derived from substances such as beeswax, honey or milk. In vegan products, these ingredients are replaced with alternative ingredients.
Many consumers choose vegan products as part of their lifestyle or personal preferences. That is why NIVEA offers a wide range of vegan skincare products that do not contain animal-derived ingredients.

How Does NIVEA Support Biodiversity Considerations?

Biodiversity is an important consideration within our responsible sourcing approach. Together with suppliers, partners and local stakeholders, Beiersdorf works on initiatives related to key raw material supply chains and land use practices.
One example is a landscape project in Sabah, Malaysia, where Beiersdorf works with partners to support responsible palm oil production and improve transparency within the supply chain. The project also includes activities related to habitat connectivity and land management in the region.
As part of this initiative, we work with farmers and local partners to support palm oil cultivation in line with the RSPO standard.
